Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy: Is It Safe and What Can It Help?

Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding experiences a woman's body goes through. Back pain, pelvic pain, sciatica and postural changes are so common they're often dismissed as "just part of pregnancy" — but they don't have to be. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is safe, gentle and highly effective at managing the musculoskeletal changes that accompany each trimester.

Why Pregnancy Changes Your Body's Mechanics

Several physiological changes during pregnancy directly affect the musculoskeletal system:

  • Postural shift: The growing uterus shifts the centre of gravity forward, increasing lumbar lordosis (low back arch) and placing greater load on the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints
  • Relaxin hormone: Produced from weeks 8–12, relaxin increases ligament laxity throughout the body to prepare the pelvis for delivery — but also reduces joint stability, increasing vulnerability to dysfunction
  • Weight gain: Additional load is distributed through joints that are simultaneously less stable due to relaxin
  • Rib cage expansion: To accommodate the growing uterus, the rib cage flares — contributing to thoracic pain and altered breathing patterns
  • Abdominal separation (diastasis recti): The linea alba stretches as the abdomen expands, reducing core stability

Common Conditions Chiropractic Treats During Pregnancy

Lower Back Pain

Affects up to 50–70% of pregnant women. Often begins in the second trimester as the growing uterus shifts the centre of gravity. Chiropractic care restores normal lumbar joint mobility and provides soft tissue relief to overloaded paraspinal muscles.

Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain

The relaxin-mediated loosening of the SI joints combined with altered weight distribution commonly causes posterior pelvic pain — pain in the buttock region and around the tailbone. Chiropractic mobilisation and stabilisation exercises address this effectively.

Sciatica

Sciatic nerve irritation during pregnancy can result from direct uterine pressure on the sacral nerve roots, piriformis tightening (a common adaptation to pelvic instability) or lumbar disc irritation. Gentle chiropractic techniques and specific stretching protocols provide significant relief.

Round Ligament Pain

Sharp, stabbing groin pain from stretching of the round ligament as the uterus grows. While chiropractic cannot treat the ligament itself, optimising pelvic alignment reduces the tension and strain on the round ligament.

Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)

Excessive movement of the pubic symphysis joint causes central groin and inner thigh pain, often making walking, stairs and rolling over in bed painful. Stabilisation exercises, a pelvic support belt and gentle pelvic realignment from a chiropractor can significantly improve SPD.

The Webster Technique

The Webster Technique is a chiropractic analysis and adjustment specific to pregnancy. It involves assessing and correcting sacral misalignment and releasing tension in the associated round ligament and uterine ligament. While often discussed in relation to encouraging optimal fetal positioning, its primary benefit is improving maternal comfort and pelvic biomechanics throughout pregnancy.

Is Chiropractic Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes. Chiropractic care is safe throughout all trimesters of pregnancy when performed by a practitioner experienced in treating pregnant patients. Treatment is adapted for each trimester:

  • First trimester: Gentle mobilisation, soft tissue therapy, no high-velocity thrust to the pelvis
  • Second trimester: Side-lying treatment positions, gentle pelvic adjustments, supported abdominal positioning
  • Third trimester: Specialised pregnancy pillows and bolsters, very gentle pelvic work, focus on comfort and preparation for delivery

Our chiropractors at Elevate Health Clinic work with pillows and bolsters that allow pregnant patients to lie comfortably in side-lying positions throughout treatment.

Post-Natal Chiropractic Care

Recovery from childbirth — whether vaginal or caesarean — places significant demands on the musculoskeletal system. Post-natal chiropractic care addresses lumbar and pelvic joint recovery, diastasis recti management and postural correction for breastfeeding and infant care activities.
